The best things about Sociology:

arrow "I found this year especially interesting, discovering other nations interactions and feminism.Overall the whole year was a great success. I liked how you got one to one service as well and help during assessment times. "
Katie, at The University of Sheffield - Read more

arrow "I do not like much about the degree program unfortunately, although the culture in contemporary society units were extremely interesting along with the theories about ethnicity and culture and the sexualisation of war."
Katie, at The University of Nottingham - Read more

arrow "Free range to choose subject matter for essays and assessed work - you can choose absolutely anything, which means no matter how dull the actual task, you can research something that actually interests you."
Janey, at University of Bristol - Read more

arrow "The broad range of modules covered. There are modules on theory, the media (including new media and new technologies which are particularly popular with my generation), family, ethnicity and methods. There are science and maths elements and although I did not enjoy science or maths at school I feel that I can finally put them into context in the world of sociology. In the course it is also possible to choose which modules you would like to take which is very advantageous as you can specialize in the areas which you most enjoy. There is also an opportunity to take modules from outside the main discipline which allows you to gain a wider knowledge and feed your interests. Last year I took a module in African Studies which was one of the highlights of my week!"
Jennifer, at The University of Birmingham - Read more

The worst things about Sociology:

arrow "It is hard to motivate yourself to do all the wider reading. In some modules there is quite alot of unecessary reading that the lecturers and seminar teachers expect you to have read. There is also little guidance within the department and inquiries have to be repeated several times before you can find an answer. (However having said that, it only applies to certain people and others are lovely. Some of the seminar teachers will go out of their way to make sure students are 100% happy.)"
Jennifer, at The University of Birmingham - Read more

arrow "The subject seems to have no parameters - the "queen of the sciences" covers everything so it feels like the work is never done. Also, most of the first year was spent being told "don't worry you won't get it right yet because you've only just started sociology"."
Janey, at University of Bristol - Read more

arrow "I found that the topics I wanted to study within my degree were not being covered and when they were, it was in extremely little detail and by very uninspiring lecturers. I subsequently left the degree program at the end of the year. However it must be noted that Sociology is a subject that is taught very differently depending on the university so it is essential to research into the topics you will be learning about before choosing where to study the subject. I must also add that the programme for the second year of the degree would have appealed to me far more, had I have stayed."
Katie, at The University of Nottingham - Read more

arrow "Maybe give lectures a few more activities which help students to remember the topics better. As a visual learner I have to express the topic through mindmaps so I remember it better for revision. A lot of the lectures are just powerpoints with bulletpoints which can get a bit boring. "
Katie, at The University of Sheffield - Read more
