The best things about Mathematics:
"I like the way my degree programme is structured, with the use of assignments as coursework and taking exams after each module is completed - rather than taking all exams together at the end of the year as with some courses."
India, at The University of York - Read more
"I love the flexibility in choice that is allowed, even from the first year. One can choose mainly pure or applied mathematics options, physics courses, computer science courses, languages, philosophy - the choice is massive. I think it is necessary to be studying the right courses to enjoy them."
Calum, at The University of Warwick - Read more
"I like learning proofs of formulas you have known for years but never known where it came from."
Katie, at Newcastle University - Read more
"It is mostly exam based grading."
Bobby, at University of Manchester - Read more
"Having a wide range of modules to choose from such as Quantum Theory and Mathematical Finance."
Emma, at King's College London, University of London - Read more
"Its layout over the three years. It's compulsory to study a set range of Mathematics throughout the first year. Then choices as to which units can be made in following years - this gives a good insight into each branch, and will aid 2nd/3rd year decisions. "
Henny, at University of Bristol - Read more
"Pure subjects, especially analysis and computational."
Finlay, at University of Bristol - Read more
"I like the fact we don't have to do much writing! I say 'much' because one nasty thing about degree Maths is that we have to write lots of proofs for everything we do. In general, Maths involves numbers, so there are no essays and not as much reading as there is for most other subjects."
Lyndsey, at The University of Birmingham - Read more
The worst things about Mathematics:
"I disliked the computing modules, especially Java."
Sasha, at Aston University Birmingham - Read more
"The computing modules are very outdated and tedious."
Jamie, at University of Bath - Read more
"It's difficult! It takes a lot of work and a lot of concentration. If you miss 1 vital point in a lecture, it may prevent you from being able to do the homework. It is a very hard course which requires a lot of commitment."
Lyndsey, at The University of Birmingham - Read more
"The inability to choose any 'open units' in the first year. I feel this could be the breath of fresh air you need, during the first big jump from A levels to degree."
Henny, at University of Bristol - Read more
"The applied maths, especially Mechanics"
Finlay, at University of Bristol - Read more
"Pedantic proofs of theorems."
Bobby, at University of Manchester - Read more
"It is very challenging at times and can be frustrating when you can't get the answer straight away."
Katie, at Newcastle University - Read more
"Undoubtedly the large amount of lectures (compared to the time Arts students have), and the early starts on most days as a consequence of this."
Calum, at The University of Warwick - Read more
