The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
1 hour tutorials and about 2 hours of lectures.
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
History, Classical Civilisation, Greek and Latin
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I chose History because I enjoyed A level so much and wanted to explore more areas. I changed after first year History to Ancient and Modern History because I really enjoyed all the Ancient Greek options I'd done in first year.
Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
It's a lot of work so you have to be very dedicated to your subject. It doesn't matter about the specialties of the tutors at your college because they find your tutors from other colleges.
It's important to choose your college on more than appearances. Go have a look round and check out the policy on accommodation and food which are important.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
We have about 2 hours of lectures and 1 tutorial per subject a week. We do either one or one and a half subjects a term.
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
Yes there is a lot of reading. I spend about 20 hours a week reading although this depends on how many subjects I'm doing.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The tutorials are really interesting. I have had especially good tutors for ancient history and it is really fun to have such in depth conversations with people who are so knowledgeable.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
I have started to get tired of spending so long in the library. I do feel like I get a lot of our my course but sometimes I'd like to have more free time.
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
They are very good. Of course the tutors are excellent and the libraries are well stocked and run.
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
The history course gives you a lot of scope to choose your options and tailor your degree to your interests. You should expect demanding work and intense tutorials which are very rewarding if you're passionate about your subject.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
It's really fun and everyone is very motivated. You'll meet loads of interesting people and have amazing experiences. It's really worth getting involved in as much as possible. As long as you're passionate it's so interesting to study at Oxford.
What is the academic life like at your university?
Very good. It's extremely stimulating.
Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
It was intense but there was a lot less pressure to drink than I'd imagined. It's quite fraught at first because yore trying to be nice to everyone but it's great once you actually know people.
What is the best and worst thing about your university?
Best thing is being with such interesting people who love to study as much as me. The worst thing is the lack of time.
Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
The college system is really good for getting involved in sports as you don't have to be that good. There are also loads of societies to get involved in and charities to volunteer for.
The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
It's very fun though not sophisticated. There isn't too much emphasis on alcohol.
What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
It's very beautiful but there's not a lot going on.
