The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
11
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Politics,History,English(What I did, only Politics is really recommended)
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I was interested in politics at school and enjoyed studying it. I thought the course at Edinburgh sounded interesting and linked to the topics that had interested me at school
Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
I would have liked to have had a more detailed course outline explaining the exact contents of the course.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
Lectures and tutorials during the week with some days free
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
There is reading expected to be done for each lecture and before each tutorial. It is essential to do the reading for the tutorial as the hour is spent discussing the readings.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The Politics course organisers are very good and give very good lectures that are interesting. I had a very good tutor for Sociology who made it interesting and thought provoking.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
Some of the topics in Politics are exactly the same as studied at school and so very repetative and some topics in Sociology are a bit boring.
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
The library has just been refurbished and is very useful and the books needed are always available.
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
Politics- 2 lectures (200-300 people) a week and 1 tutorial (12 people), 2 essays and 2 exams a year.
Sociology- 2 lectures (100-200 people) a week and 1 tutorial (12 people), 2 essays and 2 exams a term

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
The city and accommodation is very good, especially in Pollock Halls in the first year as everyone lives together so you meet a lot of people. The academic side is also very good but some topics and lecturers are better than others!
What is the academic life like at your university?
First year isn't very strenuous, only 40% to pass.
Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
It was well organised on the whole but not enough 'house' activities.
What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The area in which I have lectures and tutorials is very central and next to the library making it easier to get from one place to another.
Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
Wednesday afternoons are mainly written off for sport and there are many clubs you can join.
The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
Nightlife is vey student based and quite alcohol based but many of the Scottish students are under 18 when they start so can't go out as much or drink.
What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
Edinburgh is the perfect city to live in after school or moving away from home for the first time as it isn't very big but has all the essentials and is beautiful.
Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
Lived in halls which was very good, double bed and en-suite bathroom but quite expensive. Living in a flat in New Town in second year. Again very good location and facilities but also quite expensive.
If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Halls were catered
Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £4000 catered for the whole first year (September-May)
