The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
20

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Maths, Physics, English Literature or Language. Maybe Chemistry.

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I thought that Engineering will be a well paid job when I graduate and possibly a good way to help out in charities across the world.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
More in general about some of the modules, particularly the pure maths. I would have liked to know what to expect about the teaching methods.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
Usually 3 or 4 lectures, with tutorials most days.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
A lot of practice is required with Mathematical Modules but little reading.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
I find it stimulating and challenging. Also working through problems with friends is fulfilling.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
Some modules don't seem completely relevant, such as having to do electronics.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
The Engineering block building is quite old and ugly. The sports is very good though and campus is a nice place to be. The library is old and finding books is hard.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
Content is mainly mathematical, with mechanics and electronics modules. Typical lectures involve the lecturer explaining methods, then working examples. Tutorials involve doing problems or coursework and having oppurtunites to ask questions. Lab sessions are practical and varied, from electronics to assembling an engine.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Overall, good fun with some very nice people and some annoying people, which ultimately define the experience more than anything else. I enjoy my course and look forward to continuing.

What is the academic life like at your university?
Pretty good, I usually find myself looking forward to going to lectures, though some of my lecturers aren't particularly great.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
I loved it. It was better than I expected, everyone was so eager to be your friend, much more so than I thought it would be.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The best thing is the campus, which is very nice to hang around in. My group of friends are very nice. The town is quite small which I don't like and most of the university buildings are quite old, without being historical, and ugly. The majority of students here are privately schooled, rich and a bit posh.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
Really good, football courts, tennis courts, gym etc; all pretty cheap to go to.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
The clubs are usually pretty packed on student nights but I personally wouldn't want to be in any of the clubs without being really drunk because they are all pretty dingy and play bad cheesy music. Most people seem to concur.

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
Too small for my liking, poor nightlife. Quite good shops and some nice parks and open areas. It's quite close to the beach which is good. In general the cost of loving is pretty high.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I did live in Halls in my first year and am about to move into a house. Halls is definitely better in the first year, as this is where people tend to meet their closest friends. Moving into a house with such friends is better in the following years.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
It was catered. This is probably better from hearing everyone's opinions; being able to choose when and what you eat rather than having set times. For people who cannot cook, everyone's got to learn some time..

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £170 pw Catered - £80pw self catered.
