The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
15
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Business & Economics (Nuffield)SpanishMaths
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
The course I study is unique in the fact that the language (in my case Spanish) is linked very closely to the business side of the course. That is to say that many of the business modules are taught in Spanish, which helps with the learning of relevant vocabulary.
Aston business school is also very highly regarded amongst the large corporations and this was another key factor in my decision.
Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
I wish I'd have known a little bit more about the intranet facilities available to students. This is because, although very useful, can be a bit tempremental and can cause more problems.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
My average day can vary between having 1 lecture to having 3 or 4. Usually the main modules (Business) are taught in 2 hour lectures once a week. The spanish side of the course is much more intimate with oral, grammar, and writing classes taught separately.
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
It goes without saying that the more work you put in the more successful you will be in your degree, however there is an average of 1 hour reading for every lecture attended. With spanish however there are frequent grammar tests to ensure that the class is at the same level and progressing efficiently which I think is extremely important.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
I have to say that the flexibility of my course is very good. I can attent a number of classes of the same lecture each week if for any reason I have to miss one.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
I do not like the fact that there is a portfolio of work to hand in for the spanish module in the final week. This is beacuse in order to do this all lecture must have been attended, which is not always possible. I also feel that this is because you are likely to get higher marks towards the end of the year rather than the start, as knowledge of the language increases.
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
The academic side of the university is very good, with a number of extremely high quality lecturers and assistance. This also includes a very good library. The other facilities such as accommodation leave a lot to be desired, however new accommodation is currently being built and will be finished shortly. Other than that, the sport and swimming facilities could be better, but suffice.
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
Content is very well directed to work after leaving university and the teaching methods are intimate as the university is a small one.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Aston is unique in the way that it is a friendly self contained campus university in the heart of the city. Being a small university, you make a large number of close friends rather than a huge number of aquaintances.
What is the academic life like at your university?
It is very friendly and easygoing. Staff are friendly and you see the same people in lectures everyday which makes it even more enjoyable
Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Freshers week was one of the best weeks of my life. Living in the towers of Aston, I quickly got to know a huge number of people. And being a small university you can bump into the same people every night of the week.
What is the best and worst thing about your university?
I would say the best thing about my university is without a doubt the location. It is a very compact university that has all the benefits of a campus university but is sandwiched right in the heart of birmingham, no more than 5 minutes walk from anywhere!
Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
There are plenty of sports on offer, but the facilities are a 10 minute bus journey away from the university.
The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
The nightlife is extremely good, but alcohol is only a major factor if you want it to be. The societies know how to have a great time and drink responsibly. Alternatively it is easy to have a great night out in Birmingham in a variety of places every night of the week, as every night is a student night somewhere!
What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
I think Birmingham is a wonderful city and has a lot to offer, especially with regards to nightlife. People give Birmingham a reputation for being rough but that is only true in the outskirts of the city, like any other city I would say.
Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I live in a student house, but last year i lived in halls of residence and i would strongly reccommend anybody to do the same. This way you get to meet much more people, and get to know people very well living in a flat of 12!
If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Self catered is much better, as it gives you the lesson in budgeting yourself and learning to maintain a healthy diet, which is key after leaving university.
Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £65 pw, including all bills.
Halls with ensuite - £95 per week, including all bills.
