The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
13

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Business A-level is the most nessecary as without it you will be a step behind every body else before you have started. A good grasp of politics would help with public policy so an A level in politics would be advantage.

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I decided that with the current climate I needed to give myself the best opportunity to advance in the business world. With this reasoning I decided that it would be benefical to get a degree that enabled me to learn about both the public and private sector of business.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
I would have liked to have known more about the individual modules so that I would known what to study before I came. For example I could brush up on my politics before going to uni.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
As most of the work you are expected to do is outside reading the average day consisted of roughly one or two lectures which lasted two hours each. Every two weeks instead of a lecture you will have a tutorial which is more personal with your lecturer. You can go through any important things that you have covered(and with which people are struggling)over the fortnight

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
You are expected to do a lot of out of lectures reading, especially in the public policy side of the course. The more reading you do the easier the lectures are to grasp and therefore it helps a lot with your assessment work.

Is there anything else you think is relevant or that you would like to add in respect of your course?
I would say that you have to have a driven personality to make sure that you do the required outside reading so that you do not fall behind.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The best thing is the Organisational Behaviour module that is ran by a great lecturer, Pattrick Tissington. The module is from the business part of the degree and gives an insight into how psychology is used within businesses. From a broader perspective of the degree, I enjoy the great degree of independent learning that is required.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
I feel that the public policy side of the degree can be pretty tedious and boring. The material isn't very engaging and is not the most interesting. If you do not have a grasp of policitics you will also struggle.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
The academics are all great, extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They go out of their way to help and give you the impression that they are at the top of their field. The facilities are not the best but they are adequate for what is needed. They do not hamper your studies although competiting for books in the library can be fierce.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
The content is pretty varied, the business side is about psychological issues of a business along with the financial aspects. The public policy side of things is about economics, social policies and government intervention. The teaching is direct with lecturers mainly dictating to you with the help of an interactive white board.

ERASMUS scheme, study abroad and work placements
Have you studied on an ERASMUS or study abroad programme? Where did you go and what experience have you gained from your placement?
I havent had the opportunity as of yet.

Have you been on a work placement/year in industry? How has it benefited your study and career prospects:
I haven't been on that yet, it will be the year after next.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
The university is small and tight knit with a good nightlife and a close community. The staff are friendly and helpful and set aside time to help you. The university is on the steps of the Bullring and the centre of Birmingham so everything you want is at hand.

What is the academic life like at your university?
The academic life of the university is pretty relaxed but results orientated at the business end of each term.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
It was the best week at university, it's a good laugh and enables you to meet lots of people. The second year "aunties" are a big help.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The worst thing is that it is small and there is no football field on campus. The best thing is that it is in the middle of the big city of Birmingham.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
Every sport I can think of is on offer, even sports like dodgeball and ultimate frisbee.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
The social scene is quality as you are right by Broad Street but the guild events are pretty much the same. Nightlife is pretty alcohol orientated.

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
The ciy of Birmingham is totally student geared which makes it quality for students. Couldn't complain.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I live in halls of residence as I find that private housing accommodation is too far away. Halls of residence give you what you need in a close location.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Aston only do self catered halls.

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £70pw self catered.
