The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
Varies from term to term, between 3 and 12 hrs

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Psychology, Biology, Maths.

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I enjoy learning why people behave the way that they do and also have the option to do a year placement, which is essential nowadays.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
Keeping notes in order is essential and saves so much time and stress during exams. Also buying second hand books, saves lots of money and sometimes have notes in which are handy.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
Usually have 2 hours of lectures, lasting an hour each. This involves following lecture slides and taking notes. Then answering a weekly quiz, which counts towards the module. Extra reading is given, to expand on lectures given. Have tutorials about once a week, with our tutor, involving group work and giving advice.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
During first year, the lectures and lecture notes are enough to pass the year, but reading and extra notes, help with clarification and understanding the topics better.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The option to do a placement year and group work and seminars.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
Statistic modules, as computer programmes can become confusing.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
The academics and facilities are fantastic, and highly recommended.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
Do about 7 different modules a year, and sit exams in all of them. Most are mainly lectures, but for statistics, computer based work and practicals. Also expected to do research hours, which means participating in experiments for final years, which are interesting.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Aston is a fun-loving university, which is very close to the centre of Birmingham. Everything is within a 5 minute walk, and there is always something to do.

What is the academic life like at your university?
Great. The library is very well stocked, and can always get help with university work if needed.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Fresher's week was amazing. The university gets second and final years to become 'aunties' to look after first years, and show and help them around. Lots of things organised such as daytime trips, pub crawl and beach style party. Everything was organised at the Guild (Student Union) which is 2 minutes walk from student accommodation, so Freshers didn't get lost.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The university is very friendly and not huge so you always see people you know. Plus it is in the centre of Birmingham so perfect for shopping, eating and clubbing.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
Lots of teams and gym on site.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
Amazing! Loads to do at night and have a takeaway and a shop which stocks alcohol and tickets for clubs on campus.

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
Birmingham is an excellent city, always lots to do - shopping, eating, bowlng, lazer quest, cinema, clubbing and drinking. Plus being 5 minutes from the centre means there are no travel costs, and keeps you fit!

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
Definitely live in halls of residence, as you get the full experience. Give you a chance to meet everyone and is very handy for lectures, a one minute walk!

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
All are self-catered, but its best as can eat when you like. Although you can get a food pass for a cafe within the university for all your meals.

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £75pw self catered standard, £110 pw for Lakeside.
