The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
17
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Mathematics, Further Maths, and an I.T related subject.
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I found mathematics an interesting and satisfying subject to study. I was also aware that there is a broad spectrum of careers to embark on once I have completed my degree.
Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
That the computing is compulsory in first and second year and the teaching is not as good as I expected.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
My course is a combination of labs, tutorials and lectures. In all except for one of my subjects, the lectures would be taught at the beginning of the week and tutorials and/or lab sessions to follow. Each subject was spread out in the week so that a variety of modules were studied everyday.
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
It was not compulsory for me to purchase many books in relation to my course. However, as I was not entirely satisfied with some of the teaching of my course and thus I spent some of my time trying to understand it using my own resources such as books and Internet. The majority of work out of lectures is coursework and questions usually provided in tutorials.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
I enjoy the core module subjects such as calculus and numerical methods.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
I disliked the computing modules, especially Java.
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
Some of the lecturers are fantastic and seem to actually enjoy mathematics and the teaching of it. However, I feel that a couple of lecturers lack in enthusiasm for the subject itself as well as the teaching and therefore makes it harder for us students to maintain a positive approach and interest towards it. In spite of that the poorer lecturers tend to provide the best notes which helps a lot during exams. Despite my dislike towards the computing aspect of the course I must admit the facilities provided are fantastic.
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
In the majority of the modules covered very few are as formal as what you would think of as a typical lecture and they are actually more like tutorials. During tutorials and most lectures you are free to ask questions throughout. Exercises are either given to complete during the lecture/tutorial with the explanation and guidance of the lecturer or are given at the end of a lecture/tutorial to complete on your own at home. The computing modules either have a tutorial and a lab session combined or separately. These consist of active use of a computer programme with the assistance and guidance of a lecturer.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Really fun and friendly! The academic side is not the best for mathematics but socially it couldn't be any better!
What is the academic life like at your university?
Very different to school. Lecturers very rarely know who you are.
Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
I, like everybody else, loved Freshers' Week! It was better than I expected and I made so many friends there! The majority of my close friends were made in the first few nights of Freshers' Week!
What is the best and worst thing about your university?
It's very small! This is good as you get to know a lot of people very fast and it has a very close community within it. However, the negative aspect of that is that you have met the majority of people in your year group after completing the first year of university.
Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
There are many social sports clubs and the gym is an OK size.
The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
The guild hosts many events and the bar is always open to those who want a drink. The social side of our guild is great and the nights they put on are always great fun.
What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
It's a great night out, great for shopping and the accent's not as annoying as you think!
Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I am about to move into a student house so couldn't compare but halls of residence are fantastic and a great way to get to know people! I would definitely recommend all first years to live in halls of residence!
If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Self catered! You're going to have to learn to cook one day so you may as well do it with other people!
Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £65 for standard. We don't have catered.
