The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
15
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Sport Studies and Business Studies primarily as the course focusses on these two academic categories the most. Also recommended Maths, as certain modules within the course integrate financial management.
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I feel that I chose this course because of my interest in Sports and Business, I still compete in sport and feel that I want to enter this sector when finding a job, after doing both Sport Studies and Business at A Level I felt that I wanted to continue my learning down the same path.
Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
I wish I knew how much practical work was involved with my course. As there is none.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
My course consists of lectures and seminars, no practical content is included in the first year or study. On Monday I begin at 9am with a 2 hour seminar, this is followed by 2 more lectures lasting an hour and 2 hours. Tuesday has a morning seminar and 2 lectures which are both 2 hours. Wednesday is a day off. Thursday only includes 1 lecture in the afternoon lasting 2 hours, every other week includes a morning seminar lasting 2 hours. Friday has 1 lecture at noon lasting 2 hours. Most of the lectures and seminars cover different modules.
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
We are encouraged to read around the subjects, academic material is suggested by lecturers. This is normally available in the University library or on the internet. We are also encouraged to keep track of current affairs, especially relating to sport and business.
Is there anything else you think is relevant or that you would like to add in respect of your course?
Attendance is everything to prevent falling behind.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The thing I like most about my degree is doing my own research and analysis on subjects which I have a passion for and find interesting.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
Although I like my course choice as a whole, I feel that studying a broader subject would be interesting, for example Business Studies as a whole.
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
I feel that Sheffield Hallam's academics and facilities are top class, as I'm studying Sport, I use the gym quite often; these include top of the range facilities good information on training, diets and the academic side of sport. The library has all things needed to optimise studies, featuring a vast array of books and computers.
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
The content is varied, it covers everything the course outlines. Powerpoint is used in lectures and students are encouraged to make their own notes. Blackboard is used on-line so that lecturers and students can communicate and send work to and from each other.
