The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
6
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
History, Politics, English, Philosophy.
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
Always had an interest in history and I have always found it the easiest subject to understand.
Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
Would have been very useful to have known more about the tutors with whom you might be working. When it comes to second and third year module choices the quality of tutor can be as important a factor as the content of the course. Without much knowledge of the tutors it is difficult to get the right modules for your preference.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
We have three lectures and three seminars per week each an hour long.
Preperation for seminars makes up the bulk of the work. Most of this is done in the library however more articles are becoming available online.
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
Expected to do 24 hours of reading each week but this is rarely the case.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
Freedom to work at the times that suits you which allows for extra curricular activities and part time jobs.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
The difficulty to get books or articles due to the large number of people doing the course.
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
Mixed standards of tutors and some are much more interesting/ inspiring than others however the facilities are good.
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
Its a mixture of medieval and modern history for the first two years but more choice for third year. Expect to have to be self motivated for your work especially with doing research for essays which is best done far in advance to when you actually write the essay.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Great social scene and very enjoyable place to live due to the huge numbers of students in that area. Great facilities catering for all interests and sports.
What is the academic life like at your university?
Fairly casual in first year but a far greater need to be self motivated in second year.
Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Better than expected largely helped by being in Bodington halls which has a great atmosphere.
What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The best thing is the vast number of students and the great variety of people which makes it very easy to enjoy the social aspects of the city and make friends quickly. The worst thing for me has been housing so far. Halls were excellent in first year but our landlord in second year was a disaster.
Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
Good, again a vast range
The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
Excellent, so many options.
What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
Rough round the edges but great fun and a nice place to live.
Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
Halls of residence in first year and a house in second year. Halls of residence are best for first year.
If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Catered, which is better because you can meet more people at the meals and the food was actually very good.
Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £85pw catered.
