The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
10

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Poliics, Sociology and another, but it doesn't really matter!

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I did A-level Politics and enjoyed it so wanted to do that, however I didn't think I'd get the grades so I opted to add Sociology to bring the grade boundries down.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
I wish I'd known how difficult it would be to drop Sociology.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
Generally I'll have 2 hours of contact time a day. That tends to be a 1 hour lecture and a 1 hour seminar.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
Yes, a bit.

Is there anything else you think is relevant or that you would like to add in respect of your course?
Sociology is dull.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The Politics side.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
The Sociology side.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
Excellent. I find the lecturers to be very knowledgeable. However the seminar leaders can be fairly clueless.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
It is dependant on what modules you select. There are a lot of varying options to give a wide range of choice. You can also tailor your course to favour Politics or Sociology for your dissertation.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Good fun, good value for money, good academics and good sport. But it is miles from home if you live south of Leeds!

What is the academic life like at your university?
Very good.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Worse. A lot of forced friendships with not much to do in the day. It gets better though!!

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
Social life is brilliant and on match days (football) the city is electric. Although, it's freezing cold in the winter!

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
They are very varied and all sports seem to have a team.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
Newcastle has a brilliant social life. Alcohol is cheap and readily available although not a necessity.

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
It's brilliant with a really friendly vibe and fantastic nightlife.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
Halls first year, and then move to a house for second and third years.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Catered is better as it saves you worrying about shopping!

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £110 a week catered. You only have to pay for the weeks you're there (i.e. in term weeks).
