The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
15

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
English, Maths, a Science and either Music, Drama or P.E.

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I have always wanted to be a primary school teacher and have a particular interest in the way young people learn.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
I wish I'd known what grades were required from me.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
We usually have a lecture with a workshop to follow. Lectures usually last 50 minutes and workshops are 1hr 50mins.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
We are provided with a reading list for each subject but it is the responsibility of the student to read outside of contact hours. We are also usually provided with a paper to read in preparation for each workshop; this is especially true for Education.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The course is very hands on and practical being mainly made up of placements and university workshops. The tutors always try to make the subjects seem interesting and exciting.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
I personally do not enjoy the education course, there is very little practical and a lot of theory. I find it very difficult to understand but am aware that this is just due to the nature of this particular course.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
Moray House has it's own well stocked library and the teaching rooms etc are all well maintained with most containing smart boards.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
Expect to have a go at everything that you would expect a child to do in a classroom. The course is very hands on and often great fun. There is a lot of practical work on the course which suits many of the students.

ERASMUS scheme, study abroad and work placements
Have you been on a work placement/year in industry? How has it benefited your study and career prospects:
Being on a placement is great - it brings together everything you have learnt in lectures and workshops. It also helps to build your confidence in the classroom and you are given more and more responsibility with each placement you do.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
The University can be fun and lively but also quiet and tranquil. There is plenty to do and plenty of people to help you out if you need it.

What is the academic life like at your university?
It's good.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Freshers' Week was good; I got to meet a lot of people on my course and there was loads going on in the unions etc.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The University is very large and quite spread out, so if you are expecting a campus university then Edinburgh isn't for you.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
There are opportunities to try sports and join teams in Freshers' Week. Edinburgh Uni provides for almost any sport you can think of.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
It is not all about alcohol but student nights in the Unions and other clubs are the cheapest way to have a night out, otherwise the night life in Edinburgh can be very expensive.

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
I love Edinburgh - it's fantastic.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
Pollock halls is great but very expensive and the food is not great. I did however have a great year there and I met a lot of great people.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Catered. Although the food wasn't excellent, meal times were very social and helped in making friends. Also its saves you buying food and cooking which many students don't want to do in their first year.
