The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
20

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Maths, Computing, and Physics.

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I had a keen interest in the subject, and also due to the availability of jobs afterwards.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
I wish I'd known about the high level of contact hours and how steep the learning curve would be.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
Mainly composed of lectures, with some labs and surgeries scattered throughout.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
Mainly to take notes, and read alongside the lecture notes.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The course material is well developed and the quality of teaching is very high.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
The heavy workload.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
The university has a level of high calibre individuals and there are some good facilities, however the buildings need to be updated and improved.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
The university has a high quality of teaching with a good teacher to student ratio, as well as one to one personal tutoring, and the content is usually accredited by professional institutions.

  • Summary
  • Best and worst
  • Sport and extras
  • Social scene
  • Accommodation

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
The university has a high standard of teaching and research leading to a good academic standing, as well as a bright and vibrant social atmosphere.

What is the academic life like at your university?
The academic life is difficult but rewarding, but there is a high level of support for students.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Worse. It generally did not meet my expectations; I didn't notice the 'making the best friends of your life' part, and it was more orientated for people who enjoy alcohol.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The best thing is the good student atmosphere; the worst is the old and outdated buildings and facilities.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
The university has a set of gyms as well as multiple sports teams with a good variety of sports and facilities available.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
The social scene is good and varying, however the nightlife is heavily alcohol orientated.

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
I like it because it is a good center point for students and the local area has everything people need.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I live in a student house - halls of residence are a good option for new students as it allows them to settle in the city and make new friends, however later on, a student house is a far cheaper option for older students.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Catered is better in first year because it removes the stress of making your own food as well as allowing you to take part in the social atmosphere.

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £90 - 100 a week
