The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
6 - 8

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
History. Politics. Maths (Stats)

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
Subjects that interest me and for which I have an aptitude.Degree programme would be beneficial for my preferred career.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
A combination of lectures and small seminar groups.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
Yes, reading is required to enhance understanding of lectures and prepare for seminars

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The ability to choose areas of interest and specialise.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
Compulsory 1st yr modules - though I do appreciate the value of this method.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
Good - the lecturers and seminar tutors are knowledgeable, approachable and accessible. Library and information technology facilities are also very good, providing a relatively high level of access even at busy times of the year.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
Initially Politics covered all aspects of the discipline, through philosophy, theory and practice. History was always based on concentrated time periods or themes of student choice. Typically 2 lectures and one seminar a week are delivered per module. Lectures provide an overview and direct ones reading, seminars allow an opportunity for small group discussion.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
A small, comfortable place, where all can feel welcome to follow a study pattern of their choice. Workload is not excessive; providing an excellent degree scheme and leaving time for the all important extra-curricular activities.

What is the academic life like at your university?
Academic life at university is relaxed yet studious.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Fresher's was very enjoyable - numerous social activities were organised by university, colleges and societies. This was far better that I had expected and really helped me settle in.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The college system is highly useful for integration and student support. Campus is very well equipped. One drawback is the distance from Lancaster itself.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
Sporting societies and facilities are excellent. Most sports are catered for by a society and the sports centre is well equipped and provides good value for money.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
The social life is very good at Lancaster, but many of the Fresher's activities in particular do tend to revolve around alcohol, with few exceptions. This is not much of a concern for myself, as an active member of the real ale and cider society however!

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
Lancaster is a small, friendly city, where most needs and tastes can be catered for, both in hours of daylight and night time.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
Currently in a student house. I was in halls for my first year and this was a good way to learn about independent living, but off-campus accommodation is a must at some point in the 3 yrs.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Self-catered. This is a great way to learn the skills you need to look after yourself (there are plenty of catering outlets to provide food for those willing to spend the money) but from anecdotal experience catered halls are often not good value for money.

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £70 for non-catered, rising to £90 for en-suite accommodation.
