The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
10

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
English, Journalism, Theatre, Politics.

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
It seemed like a well rounded course to take. I was always interested in Journalism and Winchester seemed to offer a great course for this. It was not restricted to any one part of Journalism but looks at print, media, radio, etc.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
I don't feel that there was any prior knowledge that was needed before taking this course. This journalism course is designed for those who have never had a real insight into the world of journalism. It is a good way of easing you into learning the different ways of journalism.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
I would normally have a Lecture followed by a seminar as follow up for the lecture. There are also labs, i.e practical sessions where we have to complete a task in a given time.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
Every course will require further reading and journalism is no exception. In order to learn more you will need to do your own research. You learn the basics in the seminars and lectures we are only given the basis of what we need to know. We are required to go and gain more information.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
I enjoy the practical side of the course. Being able to go out within a team of 3 or 4 being your own news team can be lots of fun. Writing your own news pieces or script for radio is extremely good practice for the real world of Journalism. As part of the course we also study Law for journalists which was also really interesting and useful. I know that in year 2 and 3 of the course we are asked to have a role in Winchester News online. A news website which provides live broadcast on the internet which I very much look forward too.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
I do not enjoy the media section of the course. However this is a personal preference and may appeal to other people.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
Recently, Winchester has had a lot of work done on its academic facilities, especially those that effect Journalism. There is a new multi media News room recently completed. The multi media suite comes complete with lots of computers, each with editing software. Over all very good.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
Journalism course covers all aspects of journalism. The teaching methods used in lectures vary from day to day. Some times you will just sit there and take notes. Other days the lecture will be interactive requiring to take part and ask questions.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Overall a great university and a great place to be. With the town centre 10 mins away from the uni and Southampton only a short train ride away. With it being such a friendly university , it is easy to make friends and meet lots of new people. This is aided by the magnificent Student Union offering you a great student life. So in all in all, a brilliant university!

What is the academic life like at your university?
As a lot of the projects in which you have to complete are normally done in groups the academic life is is very much enjoyable. Also working in groups enables you to learn from other peoples ideas.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Fresher's week was a lot better than expected. They designed it in such a way that we would meet a lot of people. There was a 5 day course where you met up with the same people every day and completed different tasks. The nights out at the union were also very enjoyable. Freshers fair was also really good as it gave us all a chance to sign up to different clubs etc. Over all freshers week was extremly good.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
Best: Student Union as it if very well organised. I genuinely can not find a down side except the work side of things, but that is a given at any university.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
Winchester university has 2 outdoor tennis courts which can be used at your own leisure. They also have an indoor sports hall which can be hired out for your own use. You can also join lots of different teams such as basket ball, volley ball, tennis, dodge ball, Frisbee etc.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
Student Union is very good. 3 out 5 nights there is a themed night at the campus club. Other nights there are quiz nights, comedy shows etc. It's not 100% alcohol orientated, although there are constantly going to be drink offers etc.

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
Winchester is a lovely place. Small but that's what I like. No need to ever get a bus as the univeristy is a 5 - 10 minutes walk from the centre. It is a very historic place with lots to see and do. It also has really nice surroundings. With it being only a 10 minute train ride to Southampton, all you need is near by. Winchester is a great place to be.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
Unfortunately I have to move out of halls this year.I could not tell you in words how much I enjoyed staying in halls. The people I met there, the location, everything about it was just amazing. It's a great way to meet people, so if at all possible I really would recommend going into halls.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
I lived in catered halls and found every aspect brilliant. Not having to worry about what i was going to cook for lunch or dinner made my life easy. I would definitely recommend being catered for in the first year. However i am slightly concerned that I am going to have to cook for my self this year!!
