The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
22

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Mathematics,Further Mathematics,Physics.

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I realised during my A-levels that mathematics was my favourite pursuit and it seemed an obvious choice to take it further. Moreover, reading mathematics-related books in my spare time convinced me of this fact.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
I'm not really sure what I expected, therefore I'm not sure what I'd like to have known. Maybe the amount of lectures per week, though I always knew it'd be quite a lot.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
Length of days vary but weeks tend to be made up of around fifteen hours of lectures, two hours of supervisions, a one hour tutorial and any support classes/seminars that are signed up for: typically two to four hours.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
Examples sheets are set every week for the core mathematics courses. I would estimate around five hours of time is required every week to do three of these.

Is there anything else you think is relevant or that you would like to add in respect of your course?
Just that it's very enjoyable - both the staff and the students are a great set of people.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
I love the flexibility in choice that is allowed, even from the first year. One can choose mainly pure or applied mathematics options, physics courses, computer science courses, languages, philosophy - the choice is massive. I think it is necessary to be studying the right courses to enjoy them.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
Undoubtedly the large amount of lectures (compared to the time Arts students have), and the early starts on most days as a consequence of this.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
As far as I can tell, they are exceptional. A lot of money has been spent over the years getting Warwick the facilities, staff and students that make it an intellectually-thriving establishment. It makes me proud to study here.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
For the content of mathematics at Warwick, it would be best to consult the course guide on their website as it long and convoluted: simply due to the mass of options available at every stage! Teaching methods are lectures, support classes and tutorials/supervisions - the latter are in small groups of about four. They combine to give students a good chance at learning the material then being able to ask questions about it to somebody relevant.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Warwick is perhaps different. It is academically sound yet at the same time relaxed and not everyone is focused only on work. Whilst it may not be a place to which you would consider applying - it's definitely worth a thought. Give it a visit and find out!

What is the academic life like at your university?
Everybody studies at their own pace. You're in control of your education - it's your choice whether to go to lectures and support classes. Of course, you have problem sheets to hand in (which count towards your degree) every week, so it's worthwhile to make sure you do so!

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
It was ok. Warwick doesn't really have a Freshers' week, so our lectures began on the Tuesday and we had a maths test on the Wednesday but I don't think it mattered too much as people still had evenings to socialise.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
Best: amount of different opportunities available - both academically and socially Worst: campus can be a bit of a bubble.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
Fantastic. There's a club for most sports - and if your sport doesn't have a club and there's interest for it, the union will fund you to set it up! The sports centre has a gym which is very well priced, and the sports package includes unlimited use of facilities like the swimming pool and badminton courts.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
For a university not in a city, I would say it's quite good. There's events most nights at the union and plenty of people venture off campus into Leamington Spa, Coventry and Birmingham. Yes, alcohol does feature quite a lot but those who don't drink never really have problems joining in!

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
Coventry is highly unattractive but functions well for necessary requirements: shopping and nights out. Other places are nearby, such as Birmingham and Leamington Spa - thus there is plenty of choice about where to go.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
Student house for second year. I was in halls for the first year and this was a fantastic experience. I've only just moved into my house so I can't really make a comparison yet.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
All halls are self-catered. I think this was better for me as I like to eat what I like, when I like. Plus people enjoy cooking and eating together.

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
£85-90pw self catered.
