The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
12
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Art, Graphic Design, Design Tech etc.
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I studied this as natural progression from National Diploma in Graphic Design. The modules on the course are very varied and I thought I would learn a lot.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
Usually we are needed in university three days per week. On these days you would most likely have one lecture at 10am, followed by a seminar group (split into three seminar times throughout the day). A lot of time is allocated as self-directed study, and one tutorial per week per module is about average.
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
Most of the work you do will be self-directed, usually you will need to show progress in your weekly tutorials i.e. sketchbook work and development.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
It gives you the freedom to work in your own time.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
The course caters for all abilities, and at times isn't very challenging for those (like me) who have already studied design for two years.
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
The facilities in CSAD (where design would study) are excellent, there are plenty of Macs/PCs depending on your preference, all with up-to-date software. The library is state of the art, but people (including me) don't use it enough.
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
The content of the course is varied, this is to give you a wide experience of different types of design and help you decide what field you would like to work in. Different tutors employ very different teaching techniques, mostly seminars are discussion based, with a small group giving peer to peer feedback on each others work, but you also have access to hands-on fine art equipment if you would like to incorporate this into your work (i.e. metals, woods, screen printing, type setting etc).

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Personally, I've so far had a good experience of Coventry Uni. I've had a healthy work/social balance and found it fairly easy to maintain. The students here are overall friendly, but the locals can be a bit off. For the most part, pretty nice though. The main downside is the city itself can be a bit depressing as the midlands is under a near-constant cover of cloud. Apart from that, enjoy!
What is the academic life like at your university?
As far as I'm concerned it isn't challenging enough, but only because I have been studying the same thing for almost 4 years now.
Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Freshers' week was good. Freshers' Fayre at the Students' Union resulted in lots of freebies (get there early!) and lots of activities planned.
What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The best: the course is good, and the student community as a whole are decent people. The worst: Coventry itself, it's not the nicest place, and sometimes locals are a bit dodgy...
Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
You have to be pretty actively involved to really make the most of this kind of thing, and I just don't have that kind of commitment!
The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
There is lots of variety in regards to nightlife, no huge clubs really (think gatecrasher etc) but decent enough, and good pubs too. It isn't all alcohol orientated, and you can go out without drinking and still have fun.
What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
The city itself isn't the nicest and you need to get taxis about, especially at night.
Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I don't live halls myself, but in my opinion the best ones are Trinity Point and Raglan House.
Priory is like a maze, Singer shares bathrooms and generally isn't that nice, haven't really experienced any others.
