The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
8
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Media Studies, English, History
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
To carry on in advertising or journalism.
Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
That it consisted of mostly theory which isn't really as focused for what I want to do in the future. Post-graduate seems mandatory for all of us if we want to go straight into a career.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
A few lectures, a few added seminars every week, but mostly independent work.
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
Yes to some extent.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
The cultural relevance and the enticing lectures.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
Some lecturers are absolutely terrible at teaching and ther is a lack of the community feeling you get with other courses.
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
My department is mostly good. Good sports facilities. Good libraries.
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
Content includes a wide range of communication theories and research, applied to mostly advertising, broadcasting and social matters. Teaching methods consist of lectures and then seminars which are more personal and offer the opportunity for questions and discussion.
ERASMUS scheme, study abroad and work placements
Have you been on a work placement/year in industry? How has it benefited your study and career prospects:
I have had placements withing public relations and advertisement. At this level it hasn't really helped that much as first year of Communication Studies is predominantly all theory, and there aren't any 'hands on' tasks that work experience would have aided.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Depending on what department you go into, the academics side can sometimes be a little less than you expected, but as a whole Cardiff is a friendly and fun place to be.
What is the academic life like at your university?
Could be more outgoing. Sometimes feels like an average university, although journalism, media and architecture facilities are excellent.
Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Cardiff has a great freshers FORTNIGHT. Well planned and fun.
What is the best and worst thing about your university?
It's fun and lively, but could consist of more serious and sensible people. I often question how some of the people here got into uni!
Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
Very good amount of sport and activities on offer.
The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
Alcohol orientated and very lively. Good variation.
What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
Not too big, not too small. Friendly, but some parts are a bit rough.
Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I live in senghennydd court, one of the cheapest accomodations. people are social here, but the flats are very basic and slightly run down. Talybont is wonderful, but some say its harder to make fiends there. If you are a girl, aberdare is isolated but beautiful and very luxurious. I'd dress up as a girl to live there.
If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Senghenydd Court is optionally catered. I would recommend it as sometimes you dont really have time to cook. However, the food isn't the best.
Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
£2585 for a whole academic year.
