The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
14

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Economics, Maths, Further Maths and Geography

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
It was the best degree to fit my A-level choices and Bristol had a good reputation for this course.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
The course involves more Maths than I expected, however the university does send a letter warning applicants of this.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
I have a combination of lectures and seminars (although these are called tutorials - there are about 20 people in them).

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
A fair amount. I have a set piece for each subject to go over in weekly or fortnightly tutorials.

Is there anything else you think is relevant or that you would like to add in respect of your course?
Despite being in the press a lot recently, it is a good course that employers like due to the heavy Maths basis.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
There are interesting lectures and lecturers with a good combination of lectures and seminars.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
The hardness of Econometrics!

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
They are very good. The new Economics department has just been finished which has excellent facilities. All academics are very good lecturers.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
The course is split into Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Quantitative Methods 1, and Quantitative Methods 2. Macro goes on further than A-level to derive the AS and AD curves. Micro is different to A-level. QM1 is calculus and beyond. QM2 is different to anything taught at A-level. All modules are taught in lectures and then can be helped and explained further in seminars.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
The University of Bristol is an academic university based in a vibrant city where there is something to suit everyone. As the university is over 100 years old, the facilities are good and are constantly being improved and many lecturers have very good academic reputations. Despite the largeness of the city, I feel very safe and at home.

What is the academic life like at your university?
It is really good, and there are many academic societies that can be joined.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Better than expected. Everyone was very friendly and my halls put lots of events on to make sure we were always busy.

Are there any other notes you would like to add about life in general at university or anything else which would be relevant to a prospective student?
I would really recommend Bristol to any prospective student as I have had an amazing first year.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
Best - sociable, fun, good education and good reputation. Worst- large economics tutorial sizes.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
The sport facilities are excellent and accommodate all abilities in any sport. The social side of the sports is also very good and a great way to meet people.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
It is very fun - there are different club nights every weekday night. Bristol is large enough to have a varied nightlife unlike other towns. It can be quite alcohol related but if you don't enjoy that there are many societies e.g. film society that meet in the evenings which is another good way to meet people.

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
It is a vibrant city with lots to do. It is good for music lovers, and the shopping is excellent with hundreds of bars and restaurants.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I lived in a halls of residence which I would highly recommend. It is the best in my opinion as it is very sociable and you meet a wider variety of people. Plus you will live in a house for the rest of your life so it is nice to try something else.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
It is catered which in my opinion is better as it is more sociable and in your first year I feel it is more important to concentrate on making friends and your work than having to learn to cook for yourself.

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £70/80 per week for self catered. Catered- £90/100 per week.
