The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
20

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Biology, Chemistry, Maths (always helpful, but not essential)

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I liked science, found biology really interesting and I liked the fact that Dentistry is a very much a practical based profession. This profession also has lots of patient contact.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
Just how many lectures we would have!! And the types of material we would cover in the first two years.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
Nearly everyday without fail I have a 9am lecture. In a typical day, I will have 3-4 hours of lectures. Once a week there is usually a practical session (biochemistry or physiology experiment) which lasts for 3 hours. Also once a week there is small group tutorial - this is where you get one on one contact with a tutor. I'm back home for 4 or 5pm.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
I have no reading outside of lectures - the only work you really have to do is for tutorials. It is also very worthwhile writing up lecture notes which saves you doing them in a mad rush when it gets to exam time!

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
I like the fact that it is with other hard working, like-minded people and there are lots of lectures, which saves you doing alot of your own private study. I also really enjoy learning about science based topics in more depth than at school.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
Some of the topics on the surface seem pretty irrelevant in first year, but the lecturers always assure us they are relevant though!!

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
Very good, it's all new equipment in the Dental hospital. In labs, there are lots of impressive looking machines and equipment. Library facilities are excellent.

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
On the whole lectures. At the beginning lecturers give a hand out and you have to annotate these notes during the lectures. You've always got to be on the ball, otherwise may miss some important points!

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
I was really looking forward to university even if the thought of it all was rather daunting. I met loads of lovely people and there is always the opportunity to meet others throughout the year via sport clubs or drama groups etc. The work is definitely harder than school work but it is more interesting. Overall my year has been amazing!!

What is the academic life like at your university?
Everyone is really friendly and all the people on my course get on like one happy family.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
It was pretty good. However, it was all a bit daunting though. I went to university not knowing anyone, so all my friends that I hung around with during the fresher's week I really didn't know very well at all. I also spent loads of money what with going out, buying text books and joining clubs.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
The best is the opportunity to meet lots of people, all from different parts of the country. The worst is being around friends who don't have as many lectures and who don't need to work as hard to get by!

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
There are so many different sports you can get involved in, from tennis and rugby, to ultimate Frisbee and cheer-leading! I personally have always played tennis so I joined the club and have met many people through playing friendly matches with fellow members.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
There are so many bars and clubs - Bristol would cater for all sorts of different tastes. Alot of it is alcohol related, but having said that there are always things going on that aren't

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
University is very close to the city centre, and very convenient. I love Bristol! It's very pretty and always things going on.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
Halls of residence. Would definitely recommend it - you get to meet lots of other students of the same age going through the same experiences as you.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Catered. Saves a lot of time and nice to get back and have a meal waiting for you!!

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £120
