The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
9

Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Ethics and Philosophy (Religious Studies)English Literature English Language

Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I did Ethics and Philosophy at A-level and really enjoyed it, so decided to carry it on to degree level.

Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
Due to doing an A-level in Philosophy I was very prepared for what the degree would be like.

Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
My average day would consist of mostly lectures and sometimes seminars. I only had a tutorial once a year.

How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
I was required to do quite a lot of reading out of lectures, due to the fact that there is a lot of material to read in a Philosophy degree

Is there anything else you think is relevant or that you would like to add in respect of your course?
I enjoyed my course and the department were so friendly. I would, however, have liked to have more tutorials with my personal tutor as this would have given me more support with problems arising throughout my degree.

The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
I did not have many contact hours a week which allowed me to do more independent study.

What do you like least about your degree programme?
There were not enough tutorial meetings.

Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
I think that they were amazing!

Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
The Philosophy department is very laid back at Nottingham. The teaching methods are power points which the lecturers go through and you make notes on handouts given out at the beginning of the lecture. The lecturers ask throughout if anyone has questions, meaning there can be discussions during the lectures but these are usually saved until seminars which are fortnightly for each module.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
The University of Nottingham is a really fun university to go to, with great academic facilities and sporting opportunities. The main campus is very pretty and I could not have asked more from my experience there.

What is the academic life like at your university?
The academic life at Nottingham was really good. I enjoyed my course and the way that it was set out, as I am quite an independent person when it comes to studies. I was able to choose most of my modules throughout the three years which meant I was studying things in which I was interested.

Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Fresher's week was better than I had expected. I met so many new friends. The university had a great week planned and integrated everyone within the halls of residence really well.

Are there any other notes you would like to add about life in general at university or anything else which would be relevant to a prospective student?
The University of Nottingham is a really friendly university, based in a great city. I would recommened going to anyone.

What is the best and worst thing about your university?
One of the best things about my university is the great social life and events that the university put on for the students. Also the campus was really beautiful. I cannot actually think of anything bad about my university during the time that I was there.

Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
I was part of the women's first Volleyball team throughout my time at university and I really enjoyed it. It gave me a great chance to meet lots of different people. There are many activities and societies that you can join at Nottingham, with them all being put forward at Fresher's fair.

The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
The social scene was really fun at Nottingham. I would say from my experience it was quite alcohol orientated but then there were lots of societies and clubs where alcohol is not involved.

What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
I really like Nottingham as a city and am thinking of moving back there. It has a really pretty city centre with good shops and a great night life. There are also lots of parks and Nottingham Forest.

Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
In my first year I lived in halls of residence which I would strongly recommend for your first year at university; at Nottingham there are many types of halls of residences..with catered and self-catered. In my second and third year, I was in a student house with my friends from halls. Really good fun.

If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
My first year was catered for, which I would say is best for the first year as it is more sociable, plus you don't have to worry about cooking.

Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £100pw catered halls.Cost of self-catered halls unknown.
