The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
8
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
Business Studies, Economics, Sociology, Politics
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I wanted to do Business and Management but I did not obtain the grades so I chose this course which was offered to me as a replacement.
Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
Buying books is not necessary as the resoures in the library are fantastic.
Oh and don't waste your money at Fresher's fair.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
I only have eight hours of contact time per week. These are a mix of seminars and lectures.
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
During the first year, there is not a lot of work needed doing. You only need to obtain 40 per cent in each module and a bit of cramming before the exam is usually enough.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
When I think how easy it has been it takes a lot of stress out of studying. It is interesting. I like how you get rewarded in exams for giving structured opinions rather then just learning facts.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
I wish it was a bit more intensive in the first year. I also feel isolated and I do not receive any help from anyone apart from friends
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
Brilliant learning facilities but extra curricular facilities are average as sport is not highly promoted at Aston at all.
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
We have 12 modules throughout the year. As I am dual honours it means that for business the lecture rooms are massive with over 100 people. For international relations it's fewer and more intensive/ challenging.
The teaching methods are what you will expect; you get lectured to and it's up to you how much work you want to do after that.
Expect it to be easier then A-level second year.

Describing your university
Sum up your university in one paragraph:
Really great city university. It's got quite a motivational atmosphere and you are surrounded by students who are determined to be successful. You should really get stuck into as many groups as you can because it's the best way to meet people.
What is the academic life like at your university?
You are not hassled by anyone. The university does give you a great education but it's more of the attitude of "come and get it" rather than "you must do your work". It feels like degrees at Aston are training you to to be a brilliant graduate in a brilliant job.
Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Amazing, I was expecting a lot and it lived up to expectation. Make loads of friends then, that's when it's easiest.
Are there any other notes you would like to add about life in general at university or anything else which would be relevant to a prospective student?
Just be friendly and you make loads of friends. Don't fret over your work too much in the first year. As long as you work hard then you should be ok. If you want to talk to someone just go and do it because there probably want to talk to you as well.
What is the best and worst thing about your university?
Best thing is how friendly the close knit university is. It's like big sixth form college and everyone is always looking out for others.
The worst thing is the slight racial segregation as there is one tower that has a significantly higher amount of people of Asian origin, compared to the other two. It might be a coincidence but it is noticeable.I would prefer it if it was more mixed.
Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
It is not sport orientated but there are the usual sports: football, rugby, netball etc. There also clubs like salsa dancing so there is a vast range offered to you.
The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
Broad Street has so many fantasic clubs and there is something to do every night. There is obviously a bit of binge drinking but I don't feel it is particuarly shoved down your throat. You have the choice about how heavy or lightly you want to drink.
What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
We are right in the heart of Birmingham. Birmingham is amazing, it's like London but cheap. The clubs are fantastic and there is something for everyone.
Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I lived in a halls of residence . You should definitely take this option and also go for standard rather then luxury if you want to have loads of fun.
If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
I was in self-catered. There are no options for catered. I would chose catered if there was an option.
Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £66pw. self-catered. Although cheap, I did spend a lot of money on food.
