The course in general
How many contact hours do you have in the average week?
12
Ideally, what 3/4 subjects would you recommend doing in order to be in the best position for your course?
History, Government and Politics, History of Art and English or Philosophy
Why did you decide to study your degree programme?
I enjoyed History of Art at school, and thought that I would like to develop my knowledge in History
Explain the things you wish you'd known about your degree before you applied:
There is no choice in History of Art over what subjects you study it just comes under History of Art 1 (for first year) and History of Art 2 (for second year). For me the topics were not ideal.
Describing your average day
Explain how your day is made up. For example, do you have labs/seminars/tutorials/lectures?
Mainly lectures with one Tutorial a week for each subject.
How much extra work/reading are you required to do out of lectures?
There is a lot of recommended reading but it isn't completely necessary. There is no preparation suggested for Lectures, only tutorials.
The best and worst parts of the course
What do you like best about your degree programme?
All the different classes I take all interlink and overlap.
What do you like least about your degree programme?
The tutorials and lectures for History of Art don't relate to one another. Some of them are terrible, eg;Landscape Gardening.
Academics and course content
What do you think of your university's academics and facilities?
Good
Explain how you expected your course to be and how it compares to how it actually is. Give an outline of the content of the course.
A lot of Self Teaching. Tutorials tend to consist of either "debates" or presentations. History of Art in First Year spends a lot of time in the National Gallery of Scotland which is nice to experience teaching in front of the actual pictures.

Describing your university
What is the academic life like at your university?
Very relaxed for the first two years. The only non-relaxed thing are the deadlines.
Describe your Freshers' Week - was it as you expected, better or worse? Why?
Fresher's week was great but it is much better not to always do the organised events.
What is the best and worst thing about your university?
Best - beautiful city
Worst - umbrellas don't work because of the wind.
Sport and extra curricular
What are the sport and other activities on offer like at your university?
There is a lot of sport, both rec and competitive. The gym has everything you need and very good value. Only thing is that rugby, hockey, football and lax all get played near halls which means in second year its a bit of a trek.
The social scene
What is the social scene (and/or nightlife) like at your university? Is it particularly alcohol orientated?
Mainly clubs and bars as opposed to Pubs. A lot of alcohol involved but not always necessary. I would say that Edinburgh has a bit of everything as far as taste goes.
What do you think of the city your university is based in or near (as a city)?
Beautiful, perfect size, everything that London has but smaller. Easy to get around, easy to get out into the countryside. It isn't too far to Glasgow, has an airport with cheap flights all over Europe and the train service to London is great.
Accommodation
Do you live in a halls of residence or a student house (or college)? What would you suggest is best in your opinion?
I lived in Halls for my first year and would advise Pollock to anyone going to Edinburgh.
If you are in a hall or college, is it catered or self catered? Which is better for the first year in your opinion and why?
Mainly catered although there is also self catered accom.
Approximately, what is the average cost of accommodation per week in your first year for catered and non-catered halls/colleges?
About £3000 for the year catered.
