Live in halls or a house in your first year?

From recent reviews, students say the following about living in halls of residence, or a house in their first year:

"Halls are great for 1st year, howver a student house is better later on, as you tend to saty in and work more often and halls are very lively 24/7."
Miles, doing Business at Nottingham Trent University. Read more

"I lived in student halls in my first year which is easily the best choice. This is where you will meet the majority of your friends and so will be the people you spend the next few years of your life with. If you get stuck in a house in your first year then you are severely limited in your choice of friends and who you spend time with."
Jonathan, doing Architectural Engineering at University of Leeds. Read more

"I lived in private student accommodation because student halls were full, which I came to find was much cheaper, much more spacious and nicer. However, halls offer students a real student experience and a brilliant social life; students are always guaranteed notification and participation in all university social events during Fresher's week. It depends what your priority is - saving money or having a great social life."
Shelley, doing Business Economics at Nottingham Trent University. Read more

"The halls of residence are ok, I suggest Waddell Hall the best halls to live in, as it is more sociable. "
Sam, doing Secondary Physical Education with QTS at University of Cumbria. Read more

"I live in halls of residence as I find that private housing accommodation is too far away. Halls of residence give you what you need in a close location."
Graham, doing Business, Public Policies and Management at Aston University Birmingham. Read more

"I lived in hall of residence and even though the fire alarm going off at 3am was annoying I think it was the best option. It gives you independence plus there's a warden in each block to help if there are any emergencies."
Louise, doing Accounting and Finance at Staffordshire University. Read more

"I live in the halls of residence. I would say in the first year go to halls of residence so you can meet people. In the second year, I would suggest get a student house."
Terry, doing Business and Management at Birmingham City University. Read more

"Halls is great for making friends... houses are good for filtering true friends from mere acquaintances."
Nicola, doing Civil Engineering at Cardiff University. Read more

"I don't live halls myself, but in my opinion the best ones are Trinity Point and Raglan House. Priory is like a maze, Singer shares bathrooms and generally isn't that nice, haven't really experienced any others."
Lauren, doing Graphic Design at Coventry University. Read more

"I lived in halls of residence in my first year and I would say this is the best option. It gives you a great opportunity to get to know lots of people and the Union put on a night at Oceania in freshers week where everyone from each building wears the same colour tshirt so that when you're out you can get chatting to people who live near you. The facilities are great in halls of residence and you have cleaners, which is nice because most people are busy socialising and would forget about cleaning!"
Wendy, doing Screen at Swansea University. Read more
